Boxing lost one of its truly good people today when legendary Hall of Fame cutman Al Gavin passed away at 4PM today at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, Long Island. He suffered a stroke on June 29. All who knew him and all who loved him send thier deepest sympathies and heart felt prayers to Al's family in this time of sorrow.

GAVIN-Allan of Bethpage, NY on July 8, 2004. Retired NYC Parks Dept. Employee. "Boxing Cutman to the Stars". Beloved husband of 50 years to Joyce. Devoted father of Barbara (Bob Gilson), Allan Jr. (Terry) and Maureen. Visiting Saturday and Sunday, 2-5 and 7-9PM at the Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Broadway, Bethpage, LI. Religious Service at the Funeral Home on Monday, 10AM, with interment following at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn, NY.

BIO

Al Gavin world-renowned cutman & trainer has been around boxing for over a half a century. He was the cutman for Heavyweight World Champion Lennox Lewis and was Micky Ward's cutman in the epic battles with Arturo Gatti. In addition to being a cutman Al Gavin was the trainer - for light heavyweight contender Eric Harding.

For over forty years, Gavin has worked the corners of champions and contenders such as Bruce Selden, Kevin Kelly, Lonnie Bradley, Vito Antuofermo, Prince Naseem Hamed, Oscar De La Hoya, James "Buddy" McGirt, Louie Del Valle, Jake "The Snake" Rodriguez, Michael Grant just to name a few.

Everyone in boxing would agree that Al Gavin was an icon of the sport and a gentleman outside of boxing.
